Ergonomic office furniture is essential in the workplace to prevent your staff from suffering from aches, pains and back problems. One of the most important pieces of furniture is the ergonomic office chair as these assist in achieving a healthy posture and they support your back when you move. At Back2 one of our top selling collections is the Herman Miller range. This article highlights some background information on the company.

The Herman Miller company is over 100 years old. At Herman Miller, great importance is placed on the design, environment, community service, and the health and well-being of customers and employees. Innovative ways to improve the performance of their client's organizations has been their hallmark.

So who was Herman Miller? Herman Miller was a businessman from West Michigan who helped his son-in-law, D.J. De Pree, to purchase the Michigan Star Furniture Company in 1923. De Pree had been working at the company, which opened in 1905 since he was hired in 1909 as a clerk. De Pree knew his father-in-law was a man of honour, so he decided to rename the company after him.

When the company first began it manufactured reproductions of traditional home furniture, however in the 1930s the Great Depression caused many companies to struggle. Herman Miller was no different. This was when De Pree met New York designer Gilbert Rohde who advised him to steer away from the traditional approach to furniture and to focus on the changes in lifestyle and society. The pair teamed up and launched Herman Miller’s first collection of office furniture. From then on the company employed many designers and created an unprecedented collection of modern furniture. It wasn’t until the 1970s however when the range of ergonomic office furniture was launched. 1976 saw the launch of the Ergon Chair. The company has consistently been recognised as one of the highest profile companies for luxury ergonomic office furniture. It has even featured in Fortune Magazine’s "Most Admired Companies" annually for over 18 years.

At Back2 we stock a wide range of ergonomic office furniture from the Herman Miller collection including ergonomic chairs. One of the most popular pieces is the Aeron Chair. Also very popular are the Mirra and Sayl chairs.
