What is Traction and could it help my back?
Traction 'stretches' the spine, opening the space between the vertebrae and taking pressure off the intervertebral discs and nerves. It relaxes tight, tense muscles allowing the back to regain its natural 'S' shape. The Mastercare Back-A-Traction and the Sissel Hang Up inverts you, allowing gravity to lengthen the spine. Would an anatomical pillow help?
An anatomically shaped pillow supports the head and neck in a position where the spine is correctly aligned. This will reduce pressure on intervertebral discs and nerves. As well as foam pillows such as the Putnams Royal there are pillows made from a visco-elastic material which shapes itself to the body and is pressure relieving, including our most popular pillows - the Tempur range.
Should I be sleeping on a hard mattress?
A soft mattress can cause joint and back pain as the body sinks into the mattress making the spine adopt an unhealthy position. A hard mattress can also create pain as the body lies on top twisting the spine and putting pressure on the hips and shoulders. The mattress should give way a little under the pressure from the shoulders, hips, and pelvis so that the spine is kept straight. The best solution therefore is a mattress that will contour to your shape, allowing your hips and shoulders to sink in comfortably. In conclusion the mattress should support your body, retaining its natural shape at the same time. A mattress such as the Waterlattex Mattresses is a good budget option or alternatively the memory foam Komfi Mattresses moulds to your body shape.
Should I be using a back support belt?
A back belt provides compression and support when needed, for example during physical activities such as bending and lifting. It keeps the area warm therefore providing heat and reducing pain.
What type of exercise can I do - if any?
Regular exercise is important both for alleviating and preventing back pain. The two most important types of exercises are stretching and strengthening. These exercises can be done actively or with the help of aids. We do the Gym Balls which are very good for stretching exercises for the back and abdomen. Wobble Board for lower leg and ankle and foot strengthening, and Sit Fit for back and pelvic floor exercises.
Why would I need an office chair with a headrest
A headrest should be height and depth adjustable to provide correct head and neck support. A headrest is helpful when you need to rest your head/neck to take the pressure, weight and stress off, also aiding correct upper spine posture. We do a number of office chairs with good ergonomic headrests.
How do I avoid/treat RSI (WRULD)?
RSI has become a commonplace and painful complaint amongst office workers. Structurally RSI can be avoided if you use your hand and arm correctly for repetitive movements. Using an ergonomically correct keyboard and mouse rest, e.g. the Mousebean can be very helpful.
Can massage help?
Massage aids relaxation and gets rid of tension, pain and spasm. We have a good range of Massage Chairs which totally relax you, and a number of small products to help relieve hard knotty muscles such as our range of Manual Massagers. For a more penetrating and deep massage look at our Electric Massagers
Why does my back hurt after sitting for long periods?
It is probably due to two reasons, either you are sitting in the wrong chair or you are sitting incorrectly. We specialise in good ergonomic chairs which provide excellent support and comfortability, alternatively we do a range of cushions and Seat Wedges which are excellent in providing temporary relief.
What can I do to avoid further back problems?
"Prevention is better then cure" Ergonomically correct equipment, ranging from chairs and desks to small accessories are the key to a better life. Education, what you should and should not do, along with different Therapies to relieve the problem.
What should I look for when choosing a new desk?
Adjustabilty is the most important thing as our bodies are made to move. We do a range of Height Adjustable desks to fit the individual. The future is 'Sit-Stand', and our Sit-Stand Desks are an excellent way to keep on the move and change position during the working day.
