Would an anatomical pillow help?

An anatomically shaped pillow supports the head and neck in a position where the spine is correctly aligned. This will reduce pressure on intervertebral discs and nerves. As well as foam pillows such as the Putnams & Tempur there are pillows made from a visco-elastic material which shapes itself to the body and is pressure relieving, including our most popular - the Arkstore pillows.

Should I be sleeping on a hard mattress?

A soft mattress can cause joint and back pain as the body sinks into the mattress making the spine adopt an unhealthy position. A hard mattress can also create pain as the body lies on top twisting the spine and putting pressure on the hips and shoulders. The mattress should give way a little under the pressure from the shoulders, hips, and pelvis so that the spine is kept straight. The best solution therefore is a mattress that will contour to your shape, allowing your hips and shoulders to sink in comfortably. In conclusion the mattress should support your body, retaining its natural shape at the same time. A mattress such as the Waterlattex Mattresses is a good budget option or alternatively the memory foam Komfi Mattresses moulds to your body shape.

Should I buy a Tempur mattress?

In the past Back2 have sold and recommended Tempur mattresses to our customers, but in March 2007 Tempur changed the construction of their mattresses and have informed us in writing that they are no longer suitable for back care, but are now considered to be purely luxury mattresses. With this in mind, we DO NOT SELL OR RECOMMEND TEMPUR MATTRESSES for those people with back or spinal problems. We continue to sell the only Tempur mattress that they recommend for those with back problems; the 14cm ice blue version.

Should I be using a back support belt?

A back belt provides compression and support when needed, for example during physical activities such as bending and lifting. It keeps the area warm therefore providing heat and reducing pain. What type of exercise can I do - if any? Regular exercise is important both for alleviating and preventing back pain. The two most important types of exercises are stretching and strengthening. These exercises can be done actively or with the help of aids. We do the Gym Balls which are very good for stretching exercises for the back and abdomen. Sissel Balance Board for lower leg and ankle and foot strengthening, and Sit Fit for back and pelvic floor exercises.
